In 10Tacle's third-person action adventure, Black Buccaneer, players take control of Francis, a guy who can use a sword to kill monkeys and who can also transform into a giant beast called The Baron -- he's the hulking one that can use a bigger sword to kill monkeys, apes, baboons, gorillas, and possibly other enemies.
The level we played began simply enough. Francis starts in a stony ruinous room of sorts and then a baboon attacks him. After encouraging the primate to stop his assault by beating him in the face with a flurry of strong and weak attacks, Francis makes his way through a pretty basic platforming segment we quickly determined was "totally impossible."
We got past the three pillar jumps and spiked pit a few hours later.
Right about then we stumbled into a small gathering of gorillas. Knowing our boy Francis wasn't the best at defeating such an overwhelming force of backward animals with just his rapier, we tapped a button and became The Baron. Those gorillas didn't stand a chance! Seconds later we switched back into Francis and vaulted onto a couple of dilapidated pillars. Soon after we reached another primitive platforming area we deemed to be "completely impossible."
At a glance, Black Buccaneer from Widescreen Games (the creators of Airborne Troops, a game that does not, incidentally, feature a widescreen mode) may look and sound like Warrior Within, but it'll need to polish out all the monkey fighting and crazy leaps of faith before we can put the two in the same category.
Here's hoping Widescreen is up to the challenge. We'll have more information on Black Buccaneer sometime in the future.
